Abbey and I were inspired to create this project due to our shared interest in fitness, health, and nutrition. Additionally, we were eager to learn about business and how successful companies run in the real world. Looking back, we accomplished every goal we set for ourselves before starting the project. We wanted to observe the classes, join in on a couple of them to gain hands-on experience, meet with Josh to discuss business, and, lastly, meet with the nutritionist to learn about healthy eating habits. We engaged with each aspect and learned a lot about all of them. The only regret we have is not participating in more workout classes. By the end of our time with Results Fitness, we had joined two HIIT classes, but never had the chance to participate in their small-group personal training sessions, which were the majority of what we monitored. If we could go back, I know we’d be more enthusiastic about starting to exercise with the members earlier on, rather than waiting until the en...

After spending multiple weeks observing and participating in Results Fitness’s (RF) workout classes, a question I’ve been debating is whether attending a personalized training gym like RF is better than going to a traditional, public gym. To answer that question, several factors should be considered, including your long-term goals. If you’re looking to target a specific muscle group, such as the arms, chest, or legs, a big-box gym is likely the best option. If you can rely on yourself to remain disciplined and continue showing up even on days when working out is the last thing you want to do, then again, a public gym could work out. You must also be able to rely on intrinsic motivation rather than the extrinsic motivation you would receive from a coach watching over you and keeping you in line. Not to mention, many gyms are much cheaper and allow you to work out on your own schedule; so if working out at 11 PM after everything else is done fits best with your agenda, scheduled classes ...

After Abbey and I met with Josh to discuss the ways in which he keeps his business successfully running, we were interested in hearing about how nutrition plays a role in a healthy, balanced lifestyle. We approached Amy, the gym’s nutritionist and one of the exercise coaches, and scheduled a meeting with her. During the meeting, she first explained the journey that had led to her current position. After working as a pharmacist for twenty years, she discovered a newfound interest in nutrition while exploring her own health journey. Around that time, she was a member of Results Fitness when their health coach quit to work elsewhere. Josh was aware of Amy’s passion and offered her the job, which she accepted with enthusiasm. One of the key points Amy mentioned in our meeting was how the ideal diet consists mainly of whole foods. Each person should strive to cut out as much processed food as possible, including gummy or pill supplements; if you can find a certain nutrient in whole foods, t...

For the first time in our experience with Results Fitness, Abbey and I decided to take a more hands-on approach to our learning by joining one of their workout classes, instead of our usual observing and note-taking routine.  The class that aligned with the date we selected was a high-intensity training (HIT) class. Although we were aware of this fact, we didn’t realize how challenging it would be. Unlike the more frequent small group training classes, we stayed in the same area the entire time and followed the instructor for each exercise, which mostly lasted around 45 seconds. We did exercises such as side planks, regular planks, push-ups, combinations of push-ups and planks, and many others. I didn’t attempt to count the total number of push-ups we did, but I’m guessing it was over 50. After a certain point, it became such a struggle to keep up that I had to start modifying the workouts slightly, like doing push-ups on my knees, because I felt like my arms were on the ver...

While Abbey and I met with Josh to discuss how he runs his business, he described the journey that led him to his current position and the various techniques he frequently uses to ensure the success of his business.  First, he explained how he began with 30 clients while working as a boot camp instructor at Anytime Fitness. After discovering his love for coaching, he built up the courage to leave his employer and start his own business, Results Fitness. During the decade Josh has run his gym, he has managed to attract five times the number of clients he had when he started, with around ten of them participating for over a decade by sticking with him since his time at Anytime Fitness. As stated on the Results Fitness website, his primary mission is to help people be proactive in unlocking their full potential, paving the way for a life free from barriers and unnecessary challenges. When asked which business techniques he utilizes to guarantee success, he explained to us that he puts...

Similarly to yesterday, Abbey and I spent our day observing and taking notes on the gym's workout classes. Afterward, we split up to do personal research on fitness and health, and prepared for our meeting with Josh tomorrow by brainstorming questions and topics to ask him about.  One thing that surprised me was the level of dedication each coach shows to the gym and its members. For example, I learned that they come in at 4:45 a.m. every day to prepare for their first class at 5:30 a.m. As I mentioned in my previous blog, they know each member by name and history, as they keep detailed logs of the participants' progress on individual spreadsheets. If I could restart my Hawken project, I’d keep the main idea but tweak it to focus simultaneously on my own workout journey alongside my observations of others. Abbey and I plan to join in on their classes later down the line of our project, but I think it might have been interesting and engaging if we spent the entire time reflectin...

Today, Abbey and I spent our time at Results Fitness observing and taking notes on multiple workout classes. Afterward, we met up with Josh, the business owner, to discuss our thoughts and questions. Although each class is made up of different workouts, they all use the same schedule and organized plan. They are split up into three sections: A, B, and C, and each increases the workouts’ level of intensity. The members (or “warriors,” as they are called there) can also participate in two main types of classes. The first kind is a personal training class comprising eight warriors and one coach. The coach splits the group into two sections based on which people need more attention from the coach, versus those who are more experienced. The coach also keeps track of each member’s progress through a spreadsheet they review before the class begins. This spreadsheet details the participant's weight usage, prior injuries, and other information that the coach keeps in mind while setting up t...
