While Abbey and I met with Josh to discuss how he runs his business, he described the journey that led him to his current position and the various techniques he frequently uses to ensure the success of his business.
First, he explained how he began with 30 clients while working as a boot camp instructor at Anytime Fitness. After discovering his love for coaching, he built up the courage to leave his employer and start his own business, Results Fitness. During the decade Josh has run his gym, he has managed to attract five times the number of clients he had when he started, with around ten of them participating for over a decade by sticking with him since his time at Anytime Fitness. As stated on the Results Fitness website, his primary mission is to help people be proactive in unlocking their full potential, paving the way for a life free from barriers and unnecessary challenges.
When asked which business techniques he utilizes to guarantee success, he explained to us that he puts a lot of effort into creating a sense of community in his gym. He wants the members to feel a personal connection to the area and the coaches who work there. This is something I quickly picked up on when I began the Hawken project (described in more detail in blog 3), and I believe that Josh’s hard work is definitely paying off.
We also asked Josh about the struggles he endured throughout the process, and he willingly shared that he lacked a solid sense of direction for the first five years while running Results Fitness. He knew that he wanted to train people to enhance their health and fitness, but he didn’t know how to get recognition. As he told us, there was no point in creating this gym if no one came in to use it. After trial and error, he found that word of mouth was the most effective way to attract new clients, while Facebook ads also contributed to some success.
(Josh described many more details about how he runs Results Fitness, but a couple of key concepts were mentioned above.)
